Serik K. Akshulakov, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, MD, PhD, DSc, Professor, Laureate of the National Award in Science and Technology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Hero of Labor of Kazakhstan. Chairman of the Board in the National Center of Neurosurgery, chief consultant for neurosurgery in the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan. President of the Kazakh Association of Neurosurgeons; member of the Committee on Neurotraumatology of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Congress of Neurosurgeons. Editor-in-chief of the journals ‘Neurosurgery and Neurology of Kazakhstan’; member of the editorial Board of ‘Acta Neurochirurgica’, ‘European Journal of Neurosurgery’, ‘Pediatric Neurosurgery and Neurology’ (Russia), and ‘Epilepsy. Paroxysmal States’ (Russia). Honorary Professor in N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery, Ministry of Health of Russia.
Dr. Akshulakov performs the most complex surgeries in patients with tumors of the skull base, brain stem, and ventricles using an operating microscope and microsurgical techniques. He was the first doctor in Kazakhstan, who implemented the methods of microneurosurgery and endoscopic neurosurgery (transnasal endoscopic approaches and endoscopic operations for hydrocephalus); he was the first who used neuronavigation and performed surgical treatment of epilepsy.
Dr. Akshulakov organized 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Congresses of Neurosurgeons of Kazakhstan, educational courses of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, and 10th Asian Congress of Neurosurgeons.
He co-authored more than 300 publications (80 of them were published in foreign journals), including 13 monographs and 13 patents for inventions. A total of 25 PhD/MD theses and 5 DMSc theses were successfully defended under his supervision.
